What the vent run itself tells us

We read the house before the dryer. Postwar ranches on slabs usually vent through the rim joist, a short straight shot. Split-levels push laundry upstairs. That means a vertical climb to a roof cap. Lint falls back down every time the blower stops. Rowhouses and older brick duplexes are worse. The duct threads through a soffit or joist bay nobody can see.

Gas and electric fail differently. A gas dryer backs combustion byproducts into the laundry room when the duct chokes. Electric just cooks the heating element. Both throw the same thermal fuse. Replacing that fuse without clearing the duct kills the next one too.

Stacked washer-dryer units in condo closets get crushed transition hose. The dryer sits too close to the wall. That kink alone can cause the whole complaint. We swap foil hose for rigid or semi-rigid metal where the clearance allows.

Check your own termination from outside. On a dry day, run the dryer and put a hand near the hood. Weak air, or a flapper that will not swing, means blockage. Bird nests show up in spring hoods. Dryer sheets leave a waxy film on the lint screen that restricts airflow before the duct does.
