Why does a roof-terminated dryer vent clog faster than a basement one?

Gravity. A basement run pushes lint sideways and out. A roof run has to carry it straight up, and the second the dryer shuts off, whatever is still airborne drops back down the pipe. It collects in the elbow at the base of the vertical. In Edison that elbow usually sits in a second-floor laundry closet in a newer colonial or townhome, hidden behind drywall.

The cap is the other half. Roof caps use a hinged flapper. Lint packs the hinge and holds it open, then spring brings house sparrows and wasps into the open hood. Winter adds damp lint cake, because warm moist exhaust meets a cold terminal above the roof deck and condenses there.

Cleaning is done from both ends. Rods spin up from the laundry side so debris falls to a catch at the base. The roof side gets checked by hand (the flapper should swing free and drop shut on its own). Steep townhome pitches and brittle shingles change the access, and some roofs we work from the eave instead.

Two cycles for towels means it is already restricted. So does a hot laundry room, or mildew on closet walls. Roof runs want attention every six to nine months. If your cap has a bird screen in it, replace the cap; screens reclog within weeks no matter how well they are cleaned.
